Hi Xenomorphs! Coming to you post-Edinburgh International Film Festival where I enjoyed a quasi-religious moment hearing the great Thelma Schoonmaker talk movies and cinema magic, Alex Garland giving no-holds-barred insights into painful filmmaking experiences, and got to evangelise about my new favourite film: Hu Guan’s real-world-‘Isle of Dogs’, emotion-laden comedy drama Black Dog
I have another fantastic interview next week for you, sharing insider knowledge on all things Film festival social media marketing with a guest who’s worked on both Sundance, and The Oscars socials… 👀
…but in the meantime, here’s a round up of cool social trends, news and ideas to inspire from across the film and entertainment worlds these last two weeks…
Obsessed with Sony Pictures Classics TikTok Guide to Irish words series in the lead up to KNEECAP releasing in UK/US cinemas - educational, funny, relevant, authentic
Letterboxd did a ‘Four Favourites’ with Alien Romulus’s Facehugger:
Film Twitter (X) went wild for horse memes after @Film_Crave dropped an expanded view of A24’s poster for Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s new rom-com We Live in Time featuring a freaky-as-hell carousel horse.
Film Tweeters jumped on it, of course.
Some of my favourites are here from @NickdeSemlyen, CURZON FILM here, Alamo Drafthouse here, and MonkeyPaw Productions here
Cineworld got in fast on the ‘Demure, very mindful’ trend before it died 48 hours later…racking up 13,000 views
TikTok from @Cineworld
Cinemark prove that you really can reuse an old trend . This really simple, no frills, unboxing video showing new Beetlejuice merch used the Kardashian’s “ooh…. perfect!” trending sound from last year, and hit 285,000 views. It’s timely, relevant, unpolished = all the things TikTokkers love.

The best brands listen to their audience on social, interact with them regularly and share their content - especially when it is timely and trending. Great example here from Neon reposting a fan-made, Longlegs meme during the Democratic National Convention rumour about a ‘surprise appearance’.
Or reposting relevant meme content to tie in with new film releases, like @TakeOneCinema did here

The backlash to the backlash around It Ends With Us has begun. Drama has surrounded the marketing for Blake Lively’s new domestic-abuse movie that’s been marketed via fashion TikToks, hair product placements, and floral, cutesy imagery… causing many to mistakenly (and angrily) believe it’s a rom-com.
